Teaching Philosophy

I focus on unlocking new vocal functions for singers by building a solid foundation of breath, ease, and efficient phonation through functional exercises and carefully selected repertoire. As students are established in that foundation, I enjoy "unboxing" new vocal tools with students that add to their arsenal of efficient and marketable sounds.

I have studied both classical and musical theatre repertoire, and have a strong sensibility for singer/songwriter and other contemporary stylings. I believe that the same basic functions apply across styles, and am comfortable leading students in a variety of styles to improvement.

I also understand that some students, especially younger ones, benefit more from working on basic musicianship (e.g. note-reading, keeping a steady beat) than they would from nuanced vocal training. I delight in and have experience with adapting to students who are at a wide variety of ages and levels of training.

Ultimately, I believe voice lessons should serve the student in helping him or her to serve better with the voice. Performing on Broadway or at the Met isn't the only or best justification for musical study. It's the people each student can serve in the present who deserve the best voice that each student can bring.
